Who locks a file in windows 10 ?

 I found myself  oncemore with this annoyting predicament in windows where you wish to change a folder's name and it is locked by some mysterious process. 

Although I had dealt with this issue in the past ("How to find who locks a file on Windows - and how to release it if a service is the locker") it has been a while since that post, and it seemed wise to see if there are more convenient answers... and there are ! 

The following superuser thread "Find out which process is locking a file or folder in Windows" turned beneficial, and the gist of the advice I best liked was: 

1. Run the Resource Monitor (resmon.exe from the search box)
2. Go to the cpu tab
3. In the associated handles section search for part of the folder name that is locked

And now you can handle it !

It is surprising how many times it is word who for some reason keeps a handle long after a file has been closed.

איך להכריח את גוגל קלנדר להסתנכרן ?

גוגל קלנדר, כלי שאני משתמש בו במשך תקופה ארוכה-ארוכה (כמו מאות מיליוני משתמשים ברחבי העולם, עד כמה שחיפושי גוגל יכולים ללמד), ושחשבתי שהוא אמין ברמה גבוהה, הפתיע אותי מאוד הבוקר. 

מצאתי עצמי נתקל במצב של חוסר סנכרון בין היומן בפלאפון ליומן בדסקטופ (כלומר, בין אפליקציית קלנדר לבין קלנדר בweb), ולא שינה מה עשיתי, הם לא הסתנכרנו. 

הבעיה היתה מטרידה במיוחד כי לכאורה הבנתי מה יצר אותה - בעיות רשת ביתיות ברביעי בערב הביאו לכך שאירועים שקבעתי בעודי בדרכים לא הסתנכרנו כשחזרתי הביתה (כי הפלאפון אמור להסתנכרן בהקשרי לנתוני גוגל רק כשהוא מתחבר לרשת ביתית אמינה, והיא, כאמור סבלה מבעיות). הרשת חזרה לאיתנה במהלך חמישי, אבל הפלאפון לא הסתנכרן בהקשר  של נתוני גוגל שלו, ולא שמתי לב לזה עד הבוקר. 

אבל כששמתי לב וניסיתי לתקן זאת - זה פשוט לא עבד. סנכרון פשוט מהאפליקציה ? לא עבד. נסיונות להוריד ולהוסיף יומנים לתצוגה? לא עבדו. גרוע מזה, בשלב הזה התברר לי שגם אירועים שנקבעו קודם לכן לא הופיעו בדסקטופ, ולכך לא מצאתי שום סיבה טובה.

מה שמסבך את ההבנה של השאלה מדוע ולמה נוצרה בעיית הסנכרון. ההשערה המובילה , לדעתי, היא שבעיות במבנה המידע אצל גוגל במסגרת תהליכי רשתות הנתונים שלהם שנפתרו אצלם, בשלב מסויים, אבל 'שהתלבשו' על בעיית הסנכרון אצלי. כלומר, הנתונים היו שם כל הזמן, אבל מאיזושהיא סיבה, חלקם לא הוצגו. 

איך כל זה נפתר? (ושוב, אנחנו עוסקים כאן בהשערה לגבי הפתרון, כי למרבה הצער אין אפשרות לראות את התמונה המלאה מהצד של ניהול הנתונים אצל גוגל) 

הוספתי אירוע מדומה בדיוק באותו זמן שבו היה קבוע אירוע אמיתי ישן שמשום מה נעלם מהקלנדר בדסקטופ. שניה אחרי זה כל הנתונים "הנעלמים" הופיעו מחדש. 

אז אם יש לך בעיית סנכרון בגוגל קלנדר, והיא לא נעלמת למרות כל האמצעים המקובלים, יתכן שהוספת אירוע מדומה תשכנע את גוגל קלנדר להסתנכרן.

1. Go Start\Settings\System\About\Advanced system settings\ advanced 
2. Click the settings button for the Performance 
3. Search for the checkbox "Show shadows under windows" and if it is unchecked, check it, and if it is checked, uncheck it and recheck it. 
4. Apply.

Found the solution on this superuser.com answer. If you prefer their style of explanation, I found the third answer most helpful. 

“This User Cannot Play This Software” in a new Nintendo Switch

My kid bought a new Nintendo switch, as the older one started showing its age. But he kept getting a message - “This User Cannot Play This Software” - despite our transferring his user and save-data from the older switch according to the official guide.

Going over the official guide regarding this error message, it turned out that we missed something pretty basic, that seemed worth documenting. the Nintendo Account that purchased the game should have the new switch as its primary console.

Yes ! On a non-primary console, the game can only be started by the player that owns the game.

How do you make the new switch the primary console for the user you used to buy the games? in our case we had to do two moves:

1) deregister the primary console from that user :

• go to accounts.nintendo.com.
• Sign in with the user account you used in buying
• Choose "Shop Menu".
• Choose "Deregister Primary Console"

2) enter the Eshop, using the same user on the new switch.

That's all.

How to convert mp4 to avi in windows with the built-in tools ?

As is the common practice with office users, so are home users. And the wife recalled in the last minute that she needed to convert some videos sent to her through WhatsApp for a digital framework of her mother's. In other words, she needed to convert a small number of video files from mp4 to avi. 

Officially, it appears that windows 10 or 11 do not bring an official solution for such conversions and that one is supposed to download an app for this purpose from Windows store. 

However, since windows 10, the Photos built-in app, has this ability to convert between video formats (btw, Photos is also a rather convenient small-scale video editor for the smaller types of editing tasks one might need, and is probably the most convenient solution I know to extract still images from a video). 

How do we do that? 

1) save you mp4 file 

2) right-click on the mp4 and choose "open with" 

3) choose Photos 

4) in Photos, click save-as (you might want to stop the video from playing, as it is a nuisance)

5) and choose the "avi" format (or whatever other format you need and Photos supports). 

That is all. 

Where does adobe scan saves files on android ?

Usually, when I need to photocopy a file, and have only my cellphone around for that, I choose to use the camera app. But as I needed to photocopy a rather important document for another person, I thought that perhaps it was time to enter the world of scanning software. 

Remembering the dangers of appearing to be useful apps on the Google store, I chose to go safe, and downloaded Adobe's scan app. It is a very easy to operate app, performing excellently which made me very pleased, till the moment I wanted to copy those PDFs that were created to my computer. Sure, I could email them, but I have this habit of wishing to know where files are created on my cellphone, and to be able to move them to wherever they should be, according to my own organizational preferences. 

But searching as much as I did, I could not find those files. Hence I googled the question where does adobe scan saves files on android, and I found the answer on Adobe's community forums. 

It turns out Adobe does not keep does files on the cellphone, but instead, on their Adobe Document cloud (https://cloud.acrobat.com) (There was probably a statement in those small lettered terms of use, but you know how reading these usually goes... ) 

So, logging into the Adobe Document cloud from my PC, using the google identity that is the main one of my cell phone (which is the equivalent of the Adobe ID + Password), I was able to find those files with ease. 

a small tale regarding home backups policy: dropbox version history

I've written in the past a post about how home networks are becoming rather similar to the small offices of the past, and regarding my home-network backup solution, and a small event today reminded my how a good backup policy can make life so much easier. 

My kid was  drawing something, and as it sometimes happens to any computer user, he accidentally saved his recent work over a pervious stage that he needed for later. Most home backup solutions leave you empty handed as a home-system-administrator. 

But our choice in dropbox as our home  backup solution meant that I could come to the rescue. Using version history we quickly found the previous version, copied aside the most recent, and restored. 

If you don't know about dropbox version history, you might wish to read about it in their help section.

It isn't a feature you use everyday, but over the last few years since it has been introduced, it has been a life-saver on more than one occasion.

 datemodified:1/6/2020 .. 2/1/2021

(כמובן שאפשר לבחור את המיקום שבו נבצע את החיפוש המדוייק. זה לא חייב להיות כל המחשב (ושוב - רצוי מאוד לנהל תיקיית data ייעודית, על מחיצת data נפרדת, משיקולים שונים וחשובים, שיקצר המקום לפרטם). 

איפה קבצי הקלטת הקול בxiaomi/אנדרואיד ?

מצאתי עצמי מקליט איזשהוא קטע קולי. רציתי להעביר אותו למחשב לפני שאני שולח אותו למישהו אחר. 

ואז התחיל הקטע המביך - אני מחפש ומחפש - ולא מוצא איפה שומר xiaomi  את הקבצים של מקליט הקול. 

עברתי לגוגל - ולהפתעתי, אפילו כמה וכמה חיפושי גוגל לא הניבו תשובה שהיתה נכונה למכשיר שלי. אני מניח שזה בגלל שינויים בגירסאות אנדרואיד או בגירסאות MIUI לאורך השנים. לך תדע. זו לא היתה סוגיה מהסוג המטריד מספיק להתחיל בעיונים בארכיאולוגיה של המערכת. 

מאחר והחיפושים על המכשיר דרך הUSB או דרך מנהל הקבצים לקחו המון זמן, ונמאס לי לחכות באיזשהוא שלב, הזכרתי לעצמי מושכלות ראשונים, ורפרפתי על תיקיית android והנה -

איך נפטרים מהקובץ hiberfil.sys בחלונות 10 ?

חלונות 10, כמו קודמותיה, נוטה להתנפח לה אט-אט ככל שהיא מתבגרת, וכך שוב מצאתי עצמי מתמודד עם דסקטופ שנעלם לו קצת מרחב אחסון בעקבות עוד עדכון חלונאי זללן במיוחד. התהליך של איתור תופשי המקום וההכרעה מה לפנות מוכר לכל מי שעובד עם חלונות ודואג להפריד בין מחיצת הנתונים למחיצת הסיסטם. ומה שעצוב הוא כמובן שמרחבי אחסון שפעם נחשבו כאילו שיספיקו לכל חיי מערכת-ההפעלה, הולכים ומתגלים כלא מספקים (כן, חלונות 10 מייצרת משברים גם עם מחיצה של יותר מ-100GB). 

במילים אחרות, בן-אדם קם בבוקר, ומתברר שבמחשב שבדרך שגרה יש בו כ-15 GB פנויים במחיצת הסיסטם, אין מקום פנוי בכלל. מה עושים ? מחפשים קודם כל להיפטר ממספיק קבצי-זבל או מיותרים כדי שהמחשב יחזור לתפקד בצורה סבירה, ואפשר יהיה להמשיך ולפנות מקום. 

אלא מה? מחיקת הקבצים בתיקיית windows\temp לא הועילה. והבן-אדם בכל זאת רוצה לעשות עוד דברים עם הבוקר שלו. שיטוט מהיר בכונן הסיסטם מגלה את hiberfil.sys. בדסקטופ, כן? אני יודע שיש אנשים שאוהבים לשלוח את המחשב שלהם לשינה, אבל אני מחזיק באסכולת 70% מהתקלות קורות בכיבוי/הדלקה, אז עדיף לא לשלוח לשינה, ומכאן שעבורי הקובץ מיותר לגמרי. 

אז איך נפטרים מhiberfil.sys בחלונות 10 במהירות ? 

פותחים cmd במצב מנהל-מערכת, ומקלידים - 

powercfg -h off

הפקודה גם מבטלת את אפשרות ההיברנציה של חלונות, וגם מוחקת את קובץ hiberfil.sys. 

ועכשיו, כשיש מספיק מרחב מחיה, אפשר  להתחיל לצוד את מרחב-האחסון האבוד. 

(ואם נורא רוצים להחזיר את ההיברנציה? powercfg -h on).

https redirection in Google Blogger no longer takes place ?

 A few years ago, Google Blogger made the move to HTTPS. Most of what used to be my thriving blogosphere is no longer active, but a random discovery raised a concern - one of my blogs was delivered by plain HTTP. 

As these are text-only blogs and users are not requested to provide content, it might not be the sky is falling/end of the world security bug but in this age of HTTPS norm it is not what one wishes to see when one surfs to any website. Yes, whatever the website's nature and if only for users privacy preferences all internet websites should adopt HTTPS as default, as EFF has been promoting for ages. 

But why did a blog I remembered being delivered as HTTPS suddenly change its behavior? A quick check raised an interesting phenomena - it was not just that blog. In different blogs, with similar configuration regarding HTTPS redirection, there was a different behavior. In some the user was redirected to HTTPS, in some, the user received the contents via HTTP. 

Well, it appears I've been unknowingly relying on some technical setting that was not promised. When google turned HTTPS on by default for all the blogs running on the blogger framework (blogs using custom domains were excepted from the move to HTTPS) I saw in testing for most of my blogs (who at that time were without a custom domain) that HTTPS was automatically turned on, and assumed that no further configuration was necessary. 

But now, viewing different blogs with similar configuration regarding HTTPS, I saw a difference - different templates. It seems that Google Blogger changed something, either intentionally or by way of a new bug, and now, for some templates, HTTPS is provided only if HTTPS redirect is turned on. For others, it was still HTTPS regardless of the HTTPS redirection setting, as in the past. 

Why this has changed? I don't know. But I certainly do not accuse anyone. It was my mistake not to turn on HTTPS redirect back then. Having done that, now all the blogs provide HTTPS secured content on the go. 

It is one of those examples where you unintentionally rely on a specific behavior of a technical tool, not realizing that this behavior appears to be what you wish, but is actually an outcome of some other default, that may change. This, again, is a reminder how important it is not to skip parts of the setup, even if the final outcome seems correct at the moment. Otherwise, the complexity of software shall return to haunt you in the future, exposing assumptions that were not completely accurate. 

TLDR: Tools change, default behaviors change, and one needs to foresee that when setting up a tool. Now that HTTPS redirection in Google Blogger no longer takes place for some templates, and the setting of redirection is taken into account, a careful blogger needs to make sure to set HTTPS redirection to yes. 

How to uninstall "Microsoft Your Phone" App ?

Well, it can happen to anyone. A friend of mine mislead me about "Microsoft Your Phone", the app that lets you connect smartphones to windows and operate some of their functionality. He thought that it can be used with any smartphone, to operate every aspect of the smartphone, with a stress on the ability to run any smartphone app directly from your computer, using YourPhone App. 

Turns out it works like that only with his brand of smartphone - Samsung, but with mine (which shall be kept anonymous for miscellaneous reasons) "your phone" only supports basic functionality - messages, calls, notifications and file transfer. 

My need was the ability to centrally use all communication apps in one spot. And being unable to control all messaging apps, made MsYourPhone rather pointless in my mind, especially considering that vast amount of permissions I had to provide it, and my basic suspicion in anyone asking so much intrusion into my phone (and yes, I am well aware that both Google and the phone's manufacturer have such a potential intrusion into my life. that is the price I am forced to pay if I wish to use a smart phone). 

All of this introduction was told to explain how and why I found myself with the wish of uninstalling Your Phone. 

But lo and behold ! 

Like a villain from a movie, the did not lend itself to being uninstalled ! 

The uninstall button was greyed out ! 

Terminating the app, making sure it did not run in the background - nothing helped ! 

But with the internet at out fingertips, there is always the chance that someone else has already tackled this. And indeed - A quick search brought me to a good explanation how to uninstall Your Phone from Windows using Powershell as a management tool.  

The following command  (used in powershell run as admin) - 

get-appxpackage *yourphone* -allusers|remove-appxpackage

did the trick.  

Farewell, Microsoft Your Phone.

Every now and then I find myself opening an old text file, and face old hebrew that isn't readable. 

We are not talking here about lacking hebrew support for non-unicode programs (which is a problem that can be sorted out easily going to control panel\time & language settings\ language \ administrative language settings  - 

and changing the system locale ). 

No, we are talking on situations where the file's contents is some form of older hebrew text that has matching problmes of the types of yester-years, such as DOS/Windows, visual/logical, encoding issues, RTL/LTR and other issues which create a situation where an old file is displayed as gibberish or reversed. 

It can be so annoying, and therefore it was such a relief to find a reliable service. Having run into Pixiesoft's online Flip tool a few years ago, I've happily used it several times and found it very helpful. 

Now, that I've realized that for some reason, it isn't as easy as it should be to find this very useful conversion tool using internet search, I thought such a post would provide a useful record for me, and it might also help others who need a useful free internet service to convert older Hebrew texts.

How to move all windows in one click between monitors

I've been working with more than one monitor ever since the beginning of the Zoom epidemic, one of the side-effects of the Corona era. My main reason for sticking to one monitor till then was ease of use and the difference of viewing comfort between the larger monitor and the laptop's built-in monitor. And yes, I know that other people would disagree with me, and claim that a two monitors solution is always the easiest and best. To this I would normally reply - to each his own. 

But these, sadly, are not normal times. And thus I found myself needing the extra monitor for the aspect of communications, and a small problem kept raising its annoying little head: How can you move all windows in one action between the monitors?  

The need for this would rise on different occasion, but the most common is when you work outside your regular working place, as you get back home, and reconnect the laptop, all windows remain on the laptop's monitor, and  if you want them to move to the main monitor, you need to do it one by one. 

I am sure you would all agree that this is an annoying thing to do. 

Happily, after being slowly annoyed by this for some time now, I finally took the time to conduct a little search, and ran into a solution, in the name of: Display Fusion, a Multi-Monitor management software. 

Display Fusion brings to the table a lot more that I needed - it has powerful features like taskbars, title bar buttons and fully customizable hotkeys. With a purpose of easy management of your multiple monitors, it kind of seems silly to use it for a single purpose - but it seems justified in my eyes, considering those annoying times of passing one window at a time between monitors. 

Now, all that I have to do is make sure I have one windows in the 'right' monitor, click the new button added to all apps upper bar - 

maneuver the menu, till I get to the "move all windows to the current monitor" option - 

and there it is ! all windows are transferred to the right monitor, without the past choose and winkey+shift+left-arrow mess for each and every opened window.  

a few remarks before the end of this post: 

1) I was sure there would be a built-in option for this in the operating system - and surprisingly, there seems to be none, and this situation appears to characterize both windows and Linux! 

2) For persons working with multiple desktops or with a desktop (not a laptop) this post might seem useless. Be happy for not encountering other people's troubles (: 

3) DisplayFusion comes in a free version and a paid version. At least at this stage I am using the free version, which suits my needs. As far as I could understand the license agreement this is not a limited-time free usage license, but as always - if you find the cost/effect aspect beneficial - always support developers and pay for the software you use. I intend to do so, once I am satisfied with my trials. 

4) last, but not least, lest it disappears within the text- the Link to DisplayFusion Website.

שלחתי אותה לנסות שוב במחשב 'הציבורי' של הבית, כלומר זה שבסלון. 

אחרי שגם זה לא עזר, והסטרימינג של השיעור המשיך להיתקע עם התחלתו, החלטתי, לפני שאני גולש לפוליטיקה של מנהלי-תשתיות ומאשים את שרתי האוניברסיטה, לנסות במחשב שלי. שם, למרבה ההפתעה זה עבד ללא שום קושי. 

בחינה של החשודים האפשריים שחוסמים את הזרמת התוכן משרתי האוניברסיטה העלתה את האנטי-וירוס. במקרה הזה - KASPERSKY CLOUD. 

כן, הבנתם את המשתמע - אלה לא אותם אנטי-וירוסים בכל המחשבים. אני מנצל את היתרונות של היותי מנהל תשתיות בהיקף קטן, ודואג שיהיו במחשבים השונים אנטי-וירוסים שונים; קצת פחות נוח לניהול, אבל הגיוון, להשקפתי, נותן ביטחון רב יותר.  

משום מה קספרסקי לא טרח לציין בשום מקום, לא בlog, ולא בהודעה,  שהוא החליט לחסום סטרימינג מאחד משרתי האוניברסיטה. 

ובכל זאת, אחד היתרונות הבולטים של היותך מנהל תשתיות של עצמך זו היכולת לבצע ניסויים במהירות, ובהתאם להם להחליף כלים במהירות. מבט זריז ברשימת האנטי-וירוסים החינמיים המומלצים לשנת 2021 של PC Magazine, הסרת החשוד המיידי, התקנת מועמד חדש, ניסוי ובחינה - הבעיה נפתרה והחשוד הורשע. 

אז לא כל האנטי וירוסים יוצרים בעיות סטרימינג מהmoodle של האוניברסיטה. 

אבל מתברר שהkaspersky cloud security הוא אחד מאלה שכן.

How to copy your iPhone contacts to Android

It was probably expected. Following last week's events Interest in Android has grown considerably in my friend's household, and as I usually have a backup android phone , I was asked if I could loan it for a few days, "Just to  get the feel of it". 

What can one do, as nowadays, without your contact list, your phone is not far from being a strange appliance? So, I was asked to assist in copying the contacts list, and was surprised by how unintuitive it turned out to be. My difficulty probably stems out of being an Android user, My experience with Apple devices is limited to occasional peeks. It was surprising to see how Apple's export is different from Google's, to the extent that I thought a How-To guide may save troubles if I am required to do this again. And who knows? maybe others find this helpful as well... 

So, here are the steps, in a nutshell, but with a little extra-details for an Apple-Ecosystem-user making first steps in the realm of Android. 

Short intro: 

Android devices revolve around a Google Account. So, if you don't have one - you need to register. It is possible to have several Google Accounts on the same device, so it is your decision if to create a specific account for that device (safer), or have all of your devices use the same account (more convenient, as everything you agree to, will be shared across all of your devices).

The steps for exporting contacts from iCloud and importing them into Google : 

1. You can either create the account from the mobile device, or having an existing google account, go to your Android settings and add it there. 
2. Go to iCloud. Login. 
3. Choose Contacts
4. Choose "All Contacts" 
5. click the little cog-wheel on the lower-left corner 
6. Select All
7. Export Vcard 
8. enter the name and perform the export. 
9. Go to Google contacts. If necessary, Login. 
10. Open the side bar menu by clicking on the Hamburger button (three horizontal parallel lines)
11. Click Import on the side-bar menu 
12. Navigate to the Vcard file you created earlier. 
13. Import.
14. Now wait till your devices syncs. 

Nothing too complicated. But one would have expected to have something easier by now (which there might be, but I did not see in my rather quick search).

טלגרם הודיעה שהיא מצטרפת לקבוצת כלי המסג'ינג המאפשרים שיחות וידאו קבוצתיות. 

כזכור מהפוסט "כלי וידאו-צ'אט בתtקופת הקורונה: מה הכי כדאי" יש כמה וכמה חלופות לא רעות לזום שם בחוץ. זום הוא עדיין חלופה מובילה ואיכותית, אבל בוודאי לא מזיק להכיר אחרות, במיוחד אם מחפשים חלופות שיכולות לשרת את המשתמשים הביתיים בתרחישים שונים, במינימום עלות (כלומר, בחינם). 

נראה שהחלופה של טלגרם נהנית מכמה יתרונות שיש לציין: 

1. הנושא של הפרטיות. במיוחד אחרי תקופה בה whatsapp הצליחה להדאיג את משתמשיה   (בעזרת שינוי מדיניות שלא באמת חידש אבל הביא למודעות סוגיות מדיניות פרטיות ישנות שמאפיינות את הכלי), מדובר בנושא שטלגרם נהנית בו ממוניטין טוב. 

2. תמיכה בקבוצה של עד 30 משתתפים, כולל שיתוף מסך. 

3. טלגרם מבטיחה שהתמיכה בשיחות וידאו קבוצתיות היא "natively on all devices, including tablets and laptops".

מדובר במימוש שטלגרם הבטיחה כבר לפני לא-מעט חודשים, וטוב לשמוע שהוא הגיע. 

iPhone is disabled and iTunes does not recognize it?

Sometimes life as a home-sys-admin bring you nostalgic challenges. It has been a while since I needed to assist someone with an Apple device (thanks to the Android dominance) but a close family member that still relies on an aging Apple Eco-System has found herself in trouble. She forgot her PIN and thru repeated attempts was able to disable her iPhone. 

Yes, the dreaded "iPhone is disabled" but not with the nice "try again in X minute" - the "connect to iTunes" endgame version. Which means that some lady was extremely persistent and tried a wrong passcode more than 10 times which disabled her iPhone. 

Now, one of the reasons I don't really like Apple's approach to security is that there is a cultural clash between Apple's good UI culture, which caters for weak users and older users, and Apple's security culture, which doesn't really see these user's difficulties, and takes a stance which is way too harsh, in my mind. Personally, I'm a person of usage before security kind of sys-admin, which does not mean that I see security as unimportant, particularly in this day and age of pervasive computing. But let us face it - if security measures make you turn your own digital equipment into bricks, then something in the UI worked against you, instead of helping you. 

With this light intro aside, lets get into my sad odyssey. It took a while to understand all the required details (due to a long period of time since the user logged into iTunes with ANY of her devices) but happily , the choice to set two phone numbers in her account (which yours truly recommended a few years ago) turned out extremely useful now. And with one device working, it seemed like everything was going to turn out ok, only that ... it didn't. 

For some reason, the regular recovery process did not work. I followed the "If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled" guide - 

1. Press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the power off slider appears.
2. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone.
3. Connect your iPhone to your computer while holding the Home button.
4. Keep holding the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen.

but the recovery mode screen did not show up. iTunes was not recognizing the iPhone. I tried it on 3 different computers (two Windows PCs and when despair seemed to appear, one MacBook); I tried different USB-lightning cables (and verified them with an iPad); I tried a different order of steps. With hard reset and without. 

Nothing worked. 

iTunes did not recognize the iPhone. 

It seemed like a message about the aging iPhone becoming a brick was inevitable but I decided to check the factory reset options, willing to accept the potential price of loss of data in exchange for a once again functional cellphone. After some searches I finally found a good guide explaining how to get your iPhone to Device Firmware Update (DFU) Mode. 

Before moving ahead, if you got here because you too can't get your iTunes to see your iPhone, be aware that DFU is the parallel to factory reset in Androids. This means that all non backed up information will be lost. If your last back was taken years ago - this is the moment to lament or consider more searches, because there is no way back from that path. 

So, how to do a factory reset for an old iPhone? 

1. Plug the iPhone with a USB cable to your computer
2. Open itunes and make sure you are logged into your account 
3. Press both power and volume (lower) for 8 secs together (you can count to 8 slowly)
4. Then leave the power button and keep pressing the volume button until iTunes prompts a message that it has identified an iPhone in recovery. 

I was very happy to see taht from that point, Apple's iTunes recognized the iPhone, and took my hand and lead me all the way to a working iPhone. 

Sadly, we had no iPhone backup. It is REALLY important to keep such a backup. Gladly, the owner of the phone had also an iPad which I backed up during the previous struggles, and gladly, iTues was able to restore from the iPad backup all the required data to the iPhone, so the owner got a functional iPhone with all the contact list and main apps during the restore process. 

איפה ההקלטה של שיחת הזום שלי?

 שוב נשאלתי איך מוצאים הקלטה של שיחת זום שהסתיימה זה עתה. את התשובה אפליקציית זום נותנת בהגדרותיה: 

לוחצים על אייקון ההגדרות  - כפתור בצורת גלגל שיניים, שבממשק החלונות אצלי נמצא בצד ימין של חלון אפליקציית זום, טיפה מתחת לצדו העליון של החלון (המיקום של אייקונים כאלה יכול להשתנות בהתאם לשפת-הממשק ולמערכת-ההפעלה, אבל סביר להניח שהוא ישמור על מיקומו באיזור האייקונים של צמצום/הרחבת/סגירת החלון). 

בתוך חלון ההגדרות שנפתח, בוחרים את Recording

ושם תחת הכותרת Local Recording, רואים מיקום - Store my recording at - ומסלול לתיקיה. 

הדרך הכי מהירה להגיע התיקיה הזו המסלול הזה היא ללחוץ על כפתור הOpen הסמוך למסלול. 

קובץ ההקלטה יהיה בחלון התיקיה שייפתח  (כמו גם, ככל הנראה, הקלטוה של שיחות קודמות; יהיה קל לזהותו לפי תאריך ושעת יצירתו). 

הערה: 

אם כבר הגעת כבר אל חלון ההגדרות, שווה לסמן את האפשרות - 

Choose a location for recorded files when the meeting ends  - 

כך שזום יבקש ממך בחירה מפורשת של מיקום קובץ ההקלטה בסוף פגישה. כך זה נראה - 

וזו האפשרות הראשונה בתפריט ההקלטות, מתחת למיקום. 

על רגע מביך עם ציוד תקשורת ביתי ולמידה משמעותית בצידו

היה זה אלף ווייט (הידוע יותר בשם העט שלו - ג'יימס הריוט) שכתב פעם - 

"It was infinitely soothing to hear the other man’s problems and mistakes—especially the mistakes."

והנה נקרתה לי הזדמנות לנצל את הבלוג הזה ולנסות להעניק חוויה כזו, של רוגע אינסופי, בדמות סיפור על חוויה מביכה ולמידה בצידה שחוויתי השבוע... 

בקליפת האגוז - היתה לי תגלית מעניינת (ומביכה מאוד) השבוע בקשר למהירות האינטרנט בביתי. 

כבר זמן לא מבוטל שאני מאשים את הוט ו/או הוט.נט בכך שהמהירות היא לא מה שאנחנו משלמים עבורה. וכבר זמן לא מבוטל שאני דוחה בדחיינות מרשימה את הטיפול בנושא.... יש לי נסיבות מקילות - מאז שעברנו ל200/5 (לרגל הקורונה, כי 100/2 בוודאי לא מספיק ל-3 אנשים שנדרשים לקיים שיחות זום במקביל) סבלנו כמה וכמה סבבים של תקלות ניתוקים מעצבנות במיוחד.

ניצלתי עוד סיבוב ניתוקים  (שתוקן כמו שצריך  - סופסוף!) וביקשתי מהטכנאי הבכיר (שהגיע אחרי שהטכנאי הזוטר הצליח לעשות צחוק מעצמו בשני ביקורים) שאם כבר הכל סוף-סוף עובד ברמה כל-כך גבוהה בלי שום ניחותים והפרעות, שיוודא בבקשה-בבקשה מה החבילה האמיתית שלנו מול הוט, כי אנחנו לא מקבלים 200/5. 

הוא בדק ואמר שהכל סבבה ויש לנו באמת 200/5. הוא היה אדיב מספיק גם להעיף מבט על הציוד שלנו (ראוטר וייפיי שמשרת חלק מהבית בווייפי, ואליו מתחבר סויץ' שממנו מקבלים אינטרנט כמה מחשבים) ואמר שנראה לו שהתשתיות גם הן סבבה. 

לזכותו, הוא הבהיר לי נקודה שמשום מה לא חשבתי עליה עד אותו שלב - אם אתה מקבל מתחת ל-2Mb, החבילה שלך איפהשהוא היא 100/2. ואם ספק התשתית (הוט) הוא סבבה ואם הציוד שלך בבית סבבה - אז הבעיה אצל ספק האינטרנט. 

אז לשם שינוי לקחתי על עצמי סופסוף לברר מול ספק האינטרנט שלי (הוט.נט). הופתעתי לגלות שגם הם נשבעים באותות ובמופתים שאנחנו ב200/5. 

בדקתי שוב, למקרה שכל הניתוקים בלבלו אותי, ואכן עכשיו, כשסופסוף נהנינו מאינטרנט נטול ניתוקים והפרעות, הביצועים היו בבירור כאלה של 100/2. ומאחר ולא כל הזמן סבלנו מניתוקים (רק כל כמה שבועות) אז יש להודות שזה היה המצב מאז שהשתדרגנו מ100/2 ל200/5. 

למען האמת? בשלב הזה, מוטרד מעט מתחושות לב מבשרות פאדיחה החלטתי לבדוק את הציוד שאני משתמש בו.... ואז - אז אכן התחיל מחול המבוכה. 

בשלב הראשון גיליתי שבנתב האלחוטי נשארה הגדרה מהתקופה שבה היינו 100/2, והQoS היה 100/2. אחרי שסיימתי לדפוק את הראש בקיר, החזרתי את ההגדרה לאוטומטי, ושמחתי לראות שכל המחשבים בבית אכן מקבלים upload של מעל ל-3 וחלקם קרוב ל-5 . 

ובכל זאת, ולהפתעתי הרבה דווקא המחשבים המחוברים באופן קוי הקפידו להישאר סביב ה-90 (יש להעיר שלקוחות הwifi היו סביב ה-50 - אבל זה היה משהו שבהחלט היה אפשר להסביר בהתחשב בחומרת התקשורת שלהם ובנתב - הם והנתב התפשרו על הפרוטוקול הכי נמוך של wifi - וממנו הם דווקא הוציאו את המקסימום. אז גם אם 50~ זה לא משהו לשמוח עליו, זה בהחלט היה משהו שאפשר היה לדחות את ההתלבטות לגביו להמשך). 

לא הצלחתי להבין למה המחשבים המחוברים קווית לא מקבלים יותר מ-100. אז ירדתי לרמת הכרטיס רשת בכל מחשב, וגם בדקתי את הסויץ' שמחבר אותם אל הנתב, וראיתי שכולם 10/100/1000. בשלב הזה הבנתי שאין מנוס מבדיקת הנתב עצמו ... וכך התגלתה הפאדיחה השניה..... התברר לי שהנתב היחסית חדש שלי - Archer C60 של TP-LINK (שנקנה בגלל בעיות שפיתח ה-WRT54GL ששירת אותי נאמנה עד לפני כשנה וחצי) - מגיע עם פורטים 10/100. 

אחרי עוד שעה עליזה של דפיקת הראש בקירות ביתי בגין הפאדיחה הכפולה - לא לבדוק את הדברים הכי פשוטים - מצאתי עצמי מתנחם מעט ברגע שבו טכנאי הוט הבכיר העיף מבט נונשלנטי בארצ'ר שלנו ואמר לי שהוא טוב דיו. 

זה בהחלט היה שיעור מנחם, אבל עם לקח בצדו: אסור להעיף מבט או להניח הנחות לגבי ציוד תקשורת. חייבים לעיין בו ולעיין בו עד שמבינים את התמונה כולה. 

השלב הבא הוא כמובן רכש של wifi router חדש עם פורטים שיהיו גם הם 10/100/1000. ובאינטרנט 200/5 על אמת (בשעות הלילה הקטנות, כמובן) - ננוחם .
